Rutherford County has received statewide recognition for helping younger students build real-world money skills before they reach high school.

The Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission presented the county with its 2026 Financial Literacy Leadership Award.

The honor recognizes local efforts to bring practical financial education into public classrooms and make instruction available to students at multiple grade levels.

County Mayor Randy Allen accepted the recognition alongside Commissioner Phil Wilson during an event attended by state leaders.

A key part of the work is a recent Rutherford County Board of Education resolution expanding money-management instruction for elementary and middle school students.

Under the measure, students are expected to complete at least one age-appropriate financial literacy experience by the end of fourth grade.

A second instructional milestone is to be completed before students finish eighth grade.

Topics can help children begin understanding the value of saving, basic budgeting, planning and responsible financial choices.

The school system's partnership with the state commission provides teaching materials and professional development support to educators without additional curriculum costs.

The approach brings everyday financial decisions into the classroom years before students begin managing their own bills.

That timing matters for families who want children to connect lessons about earning and spending with the choices they see at home.

The Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission was established in 2010 to broaden access to financial education across the state.

For Rutherford County, the new award recognizes an ongoing program rather than a one-day event.

The next measure of success will be how consistently these lessons reach students and prepare them for decisions later in life.
