The debate over a proposed data center near the Nashville Zoo has escalated into one of the city’s most closely watched development fights, with Metro Council expected to consider action tonight that could dramatically change the future of the property.

The dispute centers on land near the Zoo at Grassmere, where DC BLOX, an Atlanta-based data center company, has sought to build a large data center. Zoo leaders and nearby residents have raised concerns about noise, water usage, power demand, construction impacts, and the project’s proximity to animal habitats.

On Monday, the Nashville Zoo released a detailed statement challenging claims made by DC BLOX. The Zoo argued that the company has not fully addressed concerns about the local power grid and water consumption, while also questioning parts of the permitting process.

The issue could take a major turn at tonight’s Metro Council meeting. Council members may consider late-filed legislation from the Mayor’s Office that would allow the city to acquire the property through eminent domain. If approved, that move could potentially block the proposed data center from moving forward at the site.

The debate has drawn attention beyond the immediate neighborhood because it touches several larger questions facing Nashville: how the city balances rapid development with community concerns, how much infrastructure capacity major technology projects require, and whether some properties near public institutions should be protected from industrial-scale use.

For residents in South Nashville and the surrounding area, the proposal has become a quality-of-life issue. Opponents worry that the project could bring constant mechanical noise, increased utility demands, and long-term disruption near one of the city’s most visited family attractions.

DC BLOX has defended the project and previously argued that the development would meet required standards. The company has also pushed back on criticism from opponents, saying concerns about the project have been overstated or mischaracterized.

Tonight’s council discussion may not be the final word, but it could mark a turning point. If Metro advances an effort to acquire the land, the data center dispute could shift from a zoning and permitting debate into a broader legal and public policy battle over the future of the Grassmere property.
