Franklin Band Wins Ninth Governor’s Cup at MTSU Contest |
Students bring home Grand Champion honors and prepare for national competition |

The Franklin Band has added another major honor to its record after winning the 2026 Tennessee Governor’s Cup at Middle Tennessee State University.
The Franklin High School ensemble earned Grand Champion recognition at the Contest of Champions on Saturday, October 24.
It was the band’s ninth Governor’s Cup and its first overall win at this particular competition since 2024.
The group also placed first in Class AAA and received recognition for Outstanding Music Performance.
Those results reflect months of rehearsals, travel and preparation by students, instructors, families and volunteers.
This year’s production, Message in a Bottle, uses music and movement to explore uncertainty, connection and hope.
The program blends contemporary concert music with familiar selections, creating a performance designed to tell a story across the field.
Director Dr. Michael Holland credited the commitment of the students and the support network that helps make the season possible.
The achievement arrives while the band is still preparing for several major appearances.
Its next scheduled competition is the Bands of America Middle Tennessee Regional Championship on Saturday, October 31, at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville.
The group then plans to compete in Indianapolis during the Bands of America Grand National Championships on November 12–14.
Before that trip, Franklin residents will have a chance to see the production locally at a free November 10 performance at Howard Gamble Stadium.
The Governor’s Cup is a moment to celebrate now, but the remaining schedule offers several more opportunities for students to represent Middle Tennessee.
For music families across the region, the story is a reminder that some of the most dedicated performers in the community are still in high school. |
